HPE made a big step with the announcement of HPE Cloud Volumes at the virtual HPE Discover event in its journey to be become an Everything-As-A-Service cloud company in 2022, dixit HPE CEO Antonio Neri at the past HPE Discover events.
HPE Cloud volumes adds an additional tier to store a copy of your backup data on an HPE solution with the advantages of a public cloud solution, but without the disadvantages.
What is it
HPE Cloud Volumes backups sits nicely between the already existing solutions HPE Cloud Volumes backup, that delivers a primary storage solution based on Nimble for workloads running on public clouds like Azure and Amazon, and HPE Cloud Bank storage, that is an additional storage tier for HPE’s StoreOnce backup target solution.
The nice thing about this solution, compared to many others available on the market, is that the data is not sitting in a public cloud datacenter, but in a Equinix datacenter close to those hyperscalers for the best performance, but without the egress costs from those hyperscalers when you actually want to use and recover your data. Nice!
How it works: set it and forget it
The process is quite easy, as you might expect from a cloud solution. You go to https://cloudvolumes.hpe.com/, create a cloud volume in the portal, present it to the target and use it as a backup target in your favorite data protection software. No size to specify whatsoever, since it is pay-per-use, you pay for the capacity used, not for the capacity you specified when configuring the service. You start to backup data in less than 5 minutes….Nice!
From anywhere to everywhere
Yes, you read this correctly. Use it as a backup target in your favorite data protection software. There is no vendor lock-in as such to use HPE Cloud Volumes Backup.
Of course it is integrated with HPE’s own RMC Recovery Manager Central software, allowing you to send copies (actually snapshots) from data stored on HPE storage arrays like Nimble, Primera and 3PAR, directly to an HPE StoreOnce target onsite (with an eventual copy on HPE Cloud Bank), or you move this snapshot directly to the HPE Cloud Volumes Backup target. No additional software needed, straight from the storage array. FYI, HPE RMC comes for free with the HPE storage array. You are directly compliant with the popular 3-2-1 data protection rule with the default HPE solution.
However, it is now perfectly possible as well to use HPE Cloud Volumes Backup directly from the most popular third-party data protection vendors like Commvault, Veritas and Veeam as well.
HPE Cloud Volumes backup integrates with any ISV that is catalyst compatible. Also, Any source can be backed up through ISV’s. This picture above shows an HPE Nimble array, but this could be any product in the HPE portfolio, or even other vendor arrays.
When you need to restore data, you have the choice to copy the data backup to the on-premises storage solution (no egress charges, remember!) or in to a public cloud instance, being an HPE Cloud Volumes Block target or an S3 compatible storage solution. Everything is possible.
Fast and efficient
Thanks to the utilization of the Catalyst API’s, HPE Cloud Volumes Backup Service enables source side, low bandwidth deduplication which enhances backup performance by only sending unique data from the backup server or client to the Cloud Volumes Backup Service. This means accelerated performance and deduplication efficiency with 95% less network utilization seen with HPE StoreOnce backup targets, and now as well to cloud-connected targets.
Security is also covered since all data is encrypted in transit and at rest.
Pricing
Cloud volumes are consumed in a typical cloud fashion where you are charged for what you use. This means you can scale up and down dynamically as required. There is no need for large upfront CAPEX expenditure.
A pricing calculator is available at the HPE Cloud Volumes Backup website, just enter the amount of data you want to store and how many copies you want to retain in the future.
