HPE announced this week a major update on its StoreOnce disk-based backup appliances portfolio. These updates are not only on hardware but also software related, delivering more performance, more capacity and a larger platform support.

Hardware

On the hardware side, we notice the logical move to the latest HPE Proliant technology servers being Gen10.

In the table below I tried to show the biggest differences between the Gen3 and Gen4 Storeonce platform on capacity and performance.

The smallest modell 3100 is not being replaced with a new physical model but with the already existing VSA virtual appliance that has grown (more exploded) from 50 to now 500TB of capacity.

Further we see all models growing in capacity (by using larger drives inside the system) and ingest performance.

Also the available CloudBank capacity has grown significantly. CloudBank was announced last year and enables StoreOnce to utilize public and private cloud services for long term retention and disaster recovery. It supports many public and private cloud providers like AWS S3, Microsoft Azure and Scality RING.

The high-end 6600 model is not being replaced either with a physical model, but by a federation of 8 VSA instances to get a single 4PB backup target (without dedup and compression !).

Software

Besides the StoreOnce platform changes were also some changes announced on the partner support. First is there a new version of the RMC Recovery Manager Central software bing version 6.0 that supports now HPE Nimble arrays as well besides HPE 3PAR arrays, and provides direct backup to StoreOnce arrays.

As well is there a deal now with Commvault, integrating their data protection software with the Catalyst datastores and functionality on StoreOnce.

Other things to mention is the use of a complete new UI, similar to the most other HPE interfaces based on Grommet. Also All-inclusive licensing is part now of StoreOnce, giving the customers a smoother out-of-the-box experience. No longer is there a need to purchase separate licenses for replication or Catalyst.

More information can be found on the HPE website.
